Objective: How to inform youth about the benefits of eating healthy and how juicing is an answer.
As role models we want to equip our future generations with tools to guarantee their success. Teaching them to live a healthy lifestyle is one of the most important things we can expose them to. It is not about becoming a vegan or a vegetarian but carrying the message of making healthy choices with more plant based foods.
As mentors or educators it is important that we understand the struggles of the youth. Unhealthy choices are everywhere! Fast food, take out, at school, in vending machines, or being passed out by a friend. It is important that we accept the daily temptations and equip them with ways to balance out the constant pressure to eat poorly. We don’t want to push but encourage. Starting with the basics and building a strong foundation for a healthier lifestyle is the best method. Teaching them to have a juice with their dinner instead of a can of soda. Or instead of a sugary snack, how about a cup of fruit or smoothie?
Having open discussions with youths is an effective way to inform them about the facts on healthy eating. A discussion setting allows kids to be heard and in turn hear you out. In today’s society, health is given at school; students are crammed with knowledge that they really don’t understand and have not fully processed. Our job is to help them get a better understanding and know the important facts. Such as one of the top causes of death is heart disease; which is in direct relations to not living a balanced healthy lifestyle. But a healthy choice such has having an organic juice a day benefits the body with providing 95% of the vitamins and enzymes we need.
Having great group conversation also helps the mentor/ educator as well. From conversing with kids you can get a understanding of what they know and the questions or concerns they have. As any great educator can tell you; you have to be willing to learn and adapt with your kids. We want to make health an interactive and exploratory subject. Our hope is to encourage kids to go out, try different healthy choices and teach others what they have learned.
First Lesson Goal: “Don’t like it then JUICE it!TM”
Fruits and vegetables are beneficial to the body. But many kids don’t like to eat the high compacts nutritious fruits and vegetables such as kale or collard greens. So we have developed the “If you don’t like it then juice it method;” which teaches kids to juice the fruits and vegetables they don’t like in a blend that tastes great but is also great for you.
